Johnny cash was much than he seemed, as the Man in Black he acquired a reputation Such a label does nothing but reduce his personality down to a dark and sombre state, which is drastically unfair Indeed, as indicated by John Carter Cash s forward, none of us really knew his farther Most of all Cash was human he had many layers, some of which his words began to reveal and some of which will never be known.Whilst working my way through this collection, I couldn t help but hear Cash s voice in my [...]

Johnny Cash is a man who needs little introduction Even in my only Rock and Roll youth on the east side of Cleveland, I knew who Johnny Cash was and could instantly recognize his voice on the radio I didn t know much about the man He had that Christian front and an outlaw image Forever Words starts with an introduction that covers nearly one third of the book His outlaw image really worked as the man in black and also as a man who never served a day in prison He read and re read the The Decline [...]

Earlier this school year after Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize for literature , I had my eighth grade honors students debate the question, Is there a difference between poetry and song lyrics Further, I asked them if they could tell the difference if they read them on a page The consensus was yes, there is a difference and yes, one can tell the difference is usually pretty clear.I was reminded of that discussion as I read through this collection of Johnny Cash poems It is clear that most if not al [...]

Cash is a classic pop culture poet as was Jim Morrison I have the first edition of this Most likely it will stay in my collection to be left to the American Indian Art Institute in New Mexico Some of these verses actually hurt as I was committed at age 15 at Christmas Yet the burns and cuts were a pleasure unlike with Lorca I have only read Lorca translated in one translation to type justly.Cash is profoundly common man not odd gazing from a solitary hermit s mountain Unlike Cash I am faith with [...]

In response to the awarding of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature to Bob Dylan, reporters and bloggers anxiously mused, Are song lyrics poetry As musings go, this one is wooly and threadbare as grandfather s cardigan, offering little than terms of exclusion Get out of my anthology shouts Pop Pop at the neighborhood kids A question that yields insight, but that also takes longer than a blog post to answer, might be Where is the poetry in song lyrics I found myself asking that very question whil [...]

To have a stand alone book of Johnny Cash s unknown poems is kinda strange Well, it was strange for me to want to read it, but it was strange for someone to compile it Some poems are okay, but some things were just plain weird But, if you are a Johnny Cash die hard fan, then this is for you Can be read in one sitting I like the fact that the reader gets to see Johnny s own handwriting that spans from the 1940 s to the 2000 s.

This short collection gathers previously unreleased song lyrics and poetry of the Man in Black The words visit many of Cash s usual subjects love, faith, violence, and social justice Often, you can almost hear the thumping guitar accompaniment to these words and his tough vocals Essential reading for fans I received an e galley of this book through Netgalley The book is due to be published November 15, 2016.

I think of these pages less as poems than as a collection of started and abandoned songs, but a few hours reading Johnny Cash s words, and better still, imagining his voice in my mind singing them, certainly did me a world of good The old man died with quite a few logs stacked out back, and he was good company while I read this book.
